the best kind of worn out.

worn-out-hand-stamped-jewelry*

these are the shoes david wears every day.

and guess what? they’re worn out.

there’s a hole right through the bottom of the shoe.

and you know how he did it?

exploring, walking, running, and generally getting into trouble.

and we couldn’t be happier.

i remember when david was born

and the doctor told us he would never walk, or talk

that he may not see or hear.

and we cried.

and we wondered and waited.

and one day, when he was five years old-he did it!

for months, he’d been pulling up, cruising, but finally, he walked.

  1. YES!!! Take your son and have him walk to the doctors who said he would never walk. Have him run to him, climb on him…. I love it.

  2. sigh…worn shoes are your childs story. I have four children under four and cant bear to part with their shoes once worn out or outgrown….what am i going to do with them all? They learn and experience sooo many things in them… i am too sentimental!!

  3. Precious, lifts my heart to see God’s goodness, continued blessings to you all….xoxo

  4. I was very moved by this post. My wife being pregnant at the moment I of course often have in mind that there is a slight chance of our future child not being healthy. People like you help me to understand that life can also be good as parents of a handicapped child. Thank you so much for sharing!

  5. Your blog and posts are so inspiring. It reminds me to take joy in the simple things and appreciate what I have instead of wishing for something else.

  6. I love this post! What inspiration to believe in our kids & forget what “they” say & predict. Way to go, David! 🙂

  7. DOCTORS!!!! WHAT DO THEY KNOW ANYWAY… THEY THINK THEY ARE GOD…. BUT THEY ARE NOT…. I’M THANKING GOD FOR YOUR BEAUTIFUL BLESSING OF DAVID! (WHO WILL WITHOUT A DOUBT, SHOW ALL THOSE DOCTOR’S THEY KNOW NOTHING AT ALL)

  8. I think you should send the same photos of the shoes to the doctors who told you he’d never walk, and include much the same note as on your blog. A real wake up call, I’d say! The indomitable human spirit is a medicine of sorts, too!

  9. Oh I love the way you could prove the doctor wrong! It was you who made all of the efforts.

When I was in second grade, the teacher told my mother that I would never read anything beyond second grade or able to graduate from college just because I have a “dull brown eyes.” The teacher said that it was because my brown eyes are ways of showing I’m stoned deaf and “dumb.” Of course, it upset my parents. Guess what? I graduated with a M.A and have a teaching job.

Both of my mom and you were the ones made the difference. Don’t ever give it up.. may David continue go beyond any professional expectation.

  10. I remember sitting with my 6-month-old baby in the PICU, being told his prognosis was uncertain. Only a parent who’s been there can understand the anguish. So I rejoice with you over the hole in David’s shoe!! And I also rejoice that my son is doing well now–attending college, and though he has had to overcome many obstacles, he’s grown into a fine young man. God is so good!

  11. He is blessed that you are his mother and this is how you see things though I am sure he blesses you tons as you show with this post. I am an interpreter for the Deaf and have an autistic son myself (now 23) and so I just wanted to tell you that you touched my heart, and I am glad at my house we have some of your jewelry and more on the way!

  12. Sweet sweet Lisa!
What a delight to be getting to know you better!
    Yeah David!
The big GIGGLES on his face just exude the purest JOY there is! xxooxx
Hope you got my email about the tenative plans for giveaway xo ;o)

  13. Blessings on David’s successes! May God’s grace continue to rain down upon your family! P.S. I love that family portrait that looks like a heart (where you and hubby are holding one son in the air between you and one below on the ground,,,BEAUTIFUL!).

  14. I came across your blog via 2 clicks-

The photographer who takes my family photos Hilary Helton’s blog to click ONE
    1. Tara Whitney’s blog (I lover her pictures) she had a blog with your jewelry on it which I am lusting after quite a few pieces…I have been hinting for some for Mother’s Day. Which leads me to click TWO
    2. Your blog. I totally fell in love. I have it bookmarked at work and at home. I make it a point to check it once if not twice daily.

I love your joy, happiness, and pure bliss. I can feel it as I read. It reminds me to be grateful for the life I have even though it isn’t what I had “planned”.

This post brought tears to my eyes. Thank you for sharing your joys, sorrows, and special moments with us!!!

  15. These worn out shoes are precious and beautiful. Thank you for sharing them with us, and helping us to remember how precious life is…

  16. Hi Lisa,
I check your blog often. I still need to get your address so i can send you a Christmas card. It is so great to see how David is doing. David will always hold a special place in my heart as well as you and your friendship.
    Love,
    Deb

  17. Dear lisa,
I am so happy for you and your familymembers. To see photo’s of him laughing and doing funny things, and that when the doctors told you otherwise! With some faith things can chance even if medicine says it cant! It seems like a lovely little boy, just like his brother, well done mom!

  18. So amazing how similar our stories are when our children have such different conditions. I was also told that my daughter was blind and deaf and that she would never walk. At 14 years old, she swims, ice skates, rides a bike, and does everything else they thought she wouldn’t do! Her doctor has actually said she is a miracle child! I just know it won’t be long before David is doing all of those things, as well!

  19. how simple little boy shoes can tell such a heartwarming story. I envision your little guy running and exploring wearing out his shoes! Awesome! Hugs to all of you and your photos of the little shoes are awesome too!)

  20. Awesome! Go David! We are just starting to shop for shoes. Might need to get some orthodics first. Which honestly is not a bad thing because otherwise we might not be able to find good shoes in a small enough size 🙂

  21. That is AWESOME! Go David go! We were also told our son may not walk, and we are seeing the first few steps just his past week. Praise the Lord!

  22. That is so fun!!! What a sweet post! Love that you shared what the doctors thought he wouldn’t be able to do! And what he has achieved – awesome!!! Seeing, hearing, walking — what’s next??? I await anxiously as you continue to share your family’s story. What a journey!

I sometimes wish doctors would say that with love, support, faith and prayers – anything is possible! But I know this is the medical field I am talking about!!

Just from reading your blog its evident to me that David thrives like he does because of your (and your family’s) love, committment and utter devotion to him – NOTHING can replace a Mother’s love!! You are such an inspiration Lisa!

  23. What an inspirational post! My brother was born with CP and the doctor’s told my parents the same thing. It was devastating to them, my sister and I, and the rest of our extended family and friends. Through many different kinds of therapies (speech, occupational, and physical), as well as support and help from friends and family, my brother learned to walk, talk, and do everything else everyone is able to do. One of the most inspiring and emotional moments was when my brother ran cross country in high school. No matter how long it took him to run the race…HE ALWAYS FINISHED! The joy, inspiration, love, and passion he gave to everyone else around him was AMAZING! Brought our family to tears and taught all his teammates and their family’s valuable lessons. Thanks for telling us about the “worn out” shoes, as it is a true testament that God does amazing things!

  24. Praising God with you! Your posts this week have brought even more tears and smiles than usual:) I shared in the comments on your “be still” post how I lost my baby a few months ago and am now pregnant again. One of the saddest things for me is when I look at all the little baby outfits that were never worn and the baby slings that never carried our baby… but God keeps encouraging me this week and after this post of yours I am going to look with hope at those unworn baby clothes and carriers, waiting, hoping, trusting that this precious baby inside of me will wear them and I will carry him. Thanking God with you for little worn out shoes and hoping for little worn out baby clothes for me…

  25. Praise, praise, praise the Lord!!! What a terrific story. That is indeed the best kind of worn out. I didn’t know that David could have been blind and deaf. I do remember when he learned to walk and tearing up when Linda told me! Yay, David. Keep on astounding those doctors. You do a great job of witnessing to us all and letting us know exactly who is in control!

  26. I have beeen admiring your jewelry for awhile now, and just found your blog. I read your story of David’s birth, which brought me to tears, and this post about his shoes was so lovely, and inspirational. Thank you for sharing your story and your art with us.

  27. Hooray for David (and mommy too!)! His sweet little face brings a smile to my face every time I see his picture!

  28. New shoes are always fun! Yay!!

Such a beautiful post, thank you so much for sharing. 🙂

P.S. I mentioned one of your necklaces over at my little blog for everyone to see how lovely they are.

  29. Oh I feel your joy. I know the pain of buying new shoes only because they are outgrown, but not at all worn. I can’t help but love that boy too, what a sweet source of precious pain! Precious pain is the kind that brings joy, because it brings us closer to our heavenly father! Thank you Lisa for sharing your journey with us!

  30. lisa….
that is BEAUTIFUL for so many reasons. i love that you appreciate what the Lord has done in your life and with your son. it such a beautiful story…a beautiful life. thank you for sharing the heartache and the joy with us. this is probably one of my favorite posts of yours. so simple….but says so much. we overwhelm ourselves with such little things all of the time….it’s important to take these things in. the beauty in what was never supposed to happen according to doctors. the Lord is Good and He has blessed. there is so much beauty in that. i hope you keep those “worn out shoes” forever and sit them on a bookshelf as a reminder of what a determined mind and heart can do…and that with God all things are possible. thank you for sharing.

  31. Love your testimony…and David’s! I read each post knowing that I see a miracle in what God does not only in your families life, but in the way He uses it to reach others.
