chrissie and i try to get away every couple months for some concentrated time.
it totally feeds my soul.
right now, i needed to be with her so much.
i was so excited i was actually having anxiety that something would go wrong
and prevent us from being together.

but nothing went wrong.
all went right.
it was so good. and slow. and relaxed.
with lots of time to talk and process and just be.

i am so blessed by her.
by the way she loves me for who i am.
and let’s me be ME.
and she just ‘gets’ me.
it’s so nice to be known.

my sisters, my husband, a handful of friends…i am so blessed.
who knows you?
who understands you?
my dear friend rhonda – who I’ve known for 25+ years. we have a standing every other thursday night night out – just to decompress from being wives and mothers to our families. we get the kids to bed and leave ’em w/ husbands, and go out – sometimes for a drink, sometimes for ice cream (depending on the kind of week we’ve had) – just to be. girlfriends are a glorious thing! she’s as close to a sister as I’ve had.
thank you for sharing.
i have an older sister and a little sister. my older sister and i each get along best with our little sister, though my older sister and i can make each other laugh harder than anyone else i know. (we can also push each other’s buttons harder than anyone else i know…) when we were little, at 18 months apart, everyone thought my little sister and i were twins. growing up, because we were so close in age, we had (and still have) the same group of friends.
at this time exactly three years ago, my little sister found out she was pregnant (unwed, unplanned). by the end of the year, life took an unexpected but very welcome turn for me and i was able to move from our hometown to live with my little sister two hours away when she gave birth to my niece, the first “grand” in our family. i was planning on staying for six months. hannah grace is almost two-and-a-half. at this point in my own life, 32 and unattached, i have told my little sister that we are ruth and naomi and that wherever she goes i will go unless life decides otherwise. i cannot imagine living apart from my precious niece, whom i love as if she is my own child.
my sisters and i have been through A.LOT. together. for better or for worse, we are one another’s mirror. it was pointed out to us when our parents were going through their divorce that, while we each have individual relationships with either of our parents, our relationship to one another is the same: we are sisters and it would be important for us to nurture that and be supportive of each other. we refer to our “sistership” as the “chord of three strands that cannot easily be broken” (ecclesiastes). i am thankful for my sisters that i can be completely myself and be known and fully loved. xo
I spent several hours last night with my best friend Tammy. We both decorate cakes and she came over to teach me some new tricks. It was just wonderful to be able to share some good quality girl time.
You. 🙂
Hands down my husband. I love that I get to live with the person who gets me and know me best. I’m a very blessed girl.
I have 2 sisters and the sister closest to me in age I am close with, but have to say that my 3 best girlfriends are the ones who really get me. The longer my husband and I have been married
(almost 43 years) he is getting the real me.We used to hold in our real feelings….we both agree that was such a waste of our time in the early years. We really like being real with each other now.
So glad you got to spend some time with your sister…what a gift from God to be so close.
My sister is my BFF. She is two states a way and I don’t see her often enough. But when we’re together, it’s like we’ve never been apart.

I always wanted to have a sister. I have a sister in law but I have a feeling that it’s not quite the same dynamic. You are so lucky! And you’re both so cute to boot! 🙂
awwwwwwwww you two look so lovely!
Who gets me? ME, my dear friend Lyn J – we don’t see each other very often because she is so busy, but she loves me just for being me! My Dad (even though he died 11 years ago, he is still very much here with me), my mum – sort of!!!!
My brother and sister (both older than me) don’t get me and probably never will, which makes me sad!
my husband, my mom, my kids, a few good friends… i always did want a sister though
I am lucky enough to have very fantastic people in my life that sometimes know me better than I know myself. Nothing can compare to that.
So, the picture of the coffee cup is absolutely fantastic and I was wondering if I could maybe, somehow get a copy of it. Can I buy a print or ??? Please email me at [email protected] if that would be possible. Thanks!
well…i must say that i have 4 beautiful sisters and they al get me but one more so…and i have 2 amazing friends, one male one female, they get me….my beautiful husband not only gets me but also has to put up with me…hee hee hee!!lol…glad you had a great day with your sis!!!xxx
My wonderful husband and his precious mother. Yes, my mother-in-law is one of my best friends, and I LOVE it! There is nothing more refreshing than just being with these two beautiful people.
My husband, sister, and BF from college, Jodi…who oddly enough has the same name as my sister, Jodi. These three ‘get’ me and I never have to put on a show.
Hi Lisa,
I loved reading your post! I do not have a sister and have always longed for one. I do have a very close friend who is like a sister, we may not be sisters by relation, but we are sisters at heart. We know each other, get each other and still love each other and believe we are gift from God to each other as she doesn’t have a sister either:) My husband and I are raising 2 teenage daughters, 11 mos apart, and I remind them what a gift it is to have a sister, they are very close so it is fun to watch and be a part of:) Thank you for your post, you are both beautiful ladies!

My cousin and I are 5 years apart, but neither of us has a sister, so we have always been sisters to one another. She’s the one who “gets” me! And my husband. And my BFF from college, 11 years later!
I am so envious of your weekend getaway without kids and hubby, Lisa!!
Hi Lisa,
How divine – just about nothing better for the soul than a sister getaway!
My sister – definately my sister – she knows me – she understands me – she LOVES me! I am so blessed!
xoTiffany
My older sister, Dora, is my closest confidant and friend. Meli is my good-for-the-soul and always-around-when-I-need-her best friend.
Twins are brilliant! You two look to have a lovely relationship!
Hi Lisa, I’m glad you had this chance to replenish the resources of your soul.
My husband, mom, sister, a couple of really close cousins and my best friend since 7th grade. They totally get me, I don’t have to explain a lot….they just know mw like that. And yes, what a wonderful feeling it truly is.
You are lucky to have such a wonderfully close bond with your sister and really….you look so much alike (obviously) and it’s the coolest thing.
i love you friend. so much.
Mmmm… it is so nice when they “get” you, isn’t it? I am blessed by my college roommates who are am still close to after more than 10 years. They still love me… amazing. 🙂
my awesome twin sister sarah! twins are the best!
I’m wondering if you are twins too!!! How fun! I have a sister 11 years younger than me but we are like best friends 🙂 SO glad you got time away with your sis!
You two look SO MUCH alike! I’m sure you get that a lot though. My sister and I look a lot alike (even though I don’t see it!), people ask if we are twins but I am 3 years older! Haha. We even had someone at an airport one time tell us we are sisters. “You two are sisters.” Like it was a statement and we had never even thought about it before! Haha! Sorry for being that person! 😉
sisters and best friends are gifts from the Lord. – they totally refresh the soul when you need it most.
Total cliche, but my husband has been my best friend for 13 years… ever since high-school.
With 6 kids now, we often feel the need to get away by ourselves to breathe and regroup. We find that if we don’t we get snippy and feel we are losing touch with each other. But we know each other wonderfully. We are… we.
kelly, yes we are twins and i don’t mind you asking at all!
Lisa, I have 2 beautiful, wonderful, and LOVING older sisters. I totally get this post! All 3 of us have small children, so our special times together are cherished, as well. It’s hard to get alone time with kiddies, Am I right? We make the time though, and I am so glad we do. They refuel me and support my happiness and health. Our mother passed away last January from cancer. Since then, our bond has grown into an even more special place. I thank God every single day for them. : ) Beautiful post today. <3
My mom and my daughter know me better than anyone else. I consider my mom my best friend with my daughter right in there with her.
I have several friends who really “know” me in addition to my husband who knows me most of the time 🙂
My best friend Chrissy is the only one (besides my hubby) who REALLY knows me but she lives 15 hours away. I miss having a true, genuine, be-yourself kind of friendship that is local. I’m glad you got to enjoy your sister!
oh goodness, are you twins? do you hate me for asking that?
My husband…there’s nothing like being married to your true best friend. We live overseas and I miss my 4 sisters desperately….your post struck a chord this morning. However, it helps me to keep my priorities right as I have two girls of my own that I have to raise as sister friends….is there any better way to live?
