a bit of advice.

Let’s just say, hypothetically, your dozen hard-boiled eggs came out more ‘soft-boiled’. You might think to yourself, “I’ll just put them in the microwave for a few minutes to cook them more”. I can’t speak from personal experience, but it’s possible that the eggs might explode, forcing open the door to your microwave and spraying tiny bits of hard-boiled (now fully hard-boiled) egg from the floor to the ceiling. Ugh.

  1. That’s better that you had a hypothesis instead of actually doing this and regret yourself. Its smart of you asking your readers, because you know some people out there might have had the experience.

    For example:
When my husband was five, he broke every SINGLE piece of egg shells and had the yolk facing toward the floor fan (beware of yourself if you have a floor fan in the kitchen). The fan blew the yolks all over on the kitchen wall, ceiling and so forth around the house. He put the broken shells back in the carton, pretending he didn’t do anything wrong. Image his mom, who was 8 months pregnant, got furious when she found it out for what he had done.

That’s what I would keep these things in mind.

  2. This happened to a girl that I work with three weeks ago. I was standing three feet away from the microwave when it happened. It sounded like a bomb, and I was covered in egg because the door did blow open! 🙁 I was very unhappy and startled… and it took her over 20 minutes to clean up all the egg… What a mess…

  3. Thank you Lisa! I really needed a good, laugh out loud laugh today! I’m glad you didn’t “actually” do this – hypothetically yes, it would have made a nice mess.

  4. Oh no! I hope the mess wasn’t too bad.

Here’s my foolproof method for hard boiling eggs – they come out perfect every time.

Place eggs in saucepan and cover with cold water. Turn heat to high and bring to a boil. Just as the water starts to boil, turn off the stove and remove the pan from the heat. Start the timer for 15 min. After 15 min, drain the hot water and run cold water over the eggs (you can some ice cubes too). Voila! Perfect hard boiled eggs.

    Hope that helps!

  5. oh man… I wanna get my microwave that clean… I’m such a mess when it comes to heat stuff in it… 😐
And i did know about that egg stuff… And you made think of a friend you had a sausages can (closed) inside the microw. 😐 now that’s an explosion…..

  6. Put a cup of vinegar and a bit of water in a microwave safe bowl and turn it on for few minutes. This will “steam” up the microwave. You can then wipe up the inside of the microwave easily and it will smell fresh too.

  7. Wow, I just saw this last night on Food Network’s “Food Detectives!” No grapes or carrots, either – they could combust. Weird!

  8. Well, hypothetically speaking, it seems that you like your hard-boiled eggs “sunny-side up.” I hope you’re able to clean up the yellow mess before the stench of exploded egg is all over your home. 🙂

  9. Ok, I’m embarrassed to say but I’ve unfortunately had the experience of what happens with eggs in the microwave. It wasn’t my idea, my husband’s. I didn’t know he did it until it exploded and blew the door open! Scared the daylights out of us, stunk for days!! GROSS!!!
