it seemed to easy to connect and hang out when i swam in high school or lived in the dorms during college. now with kids and work and all kinds of activities, i find it harder to connect with my friends consistently. let alone make new friends. it takes time to trust someone, doesn’t it?

hmmm…how much space do i have to describe my best friend in the whole world? her name is angie and she’s my big sister. unlike many friends who come and go with the different seasons of life, my sister has been by my side through them all. she tells me the truth no matter what, and held me as i cried from my first heartbreak. we’ve laughed so hard we’ve peed our pants…yes…it’s true. we can be silly or serious together and it doesn’t matter how long we’re apart – we always pick up right where we left off. my sister is my inspiration; she is my encourager; my mission goer buddy; my best friend…i mean it. she is everything that defines a best friend…sisters.

Friendships develop over time and that is sometimes hard to come by when you’re a mom. I just moved from NJ to MA and while I still talk and email with friends. I miss their company. I miss the activities we shared. I would like to share one of these necklaces with one of those special friends who has tried hard to keep in touch.

One of the most important qualities in a friendship (for me) is accountability. I think it encapsulates all other important qualities (love, loyalty, honesty, humility, etc.). When you are accountable to a good friend, you know that they will love you enough to let you know when you are messing up, or will celebrate with you during the rare times when you feel like you really are doing things right. Without accountability I don’t think true friendship can exist. I am thankful to have a couple of friends who I am accountable to and who are to me as well.
A good friend is loyal, must have a sense of humor and totally GET who I am.

A good friend never looks around the room for others when you’re talking.
friendship is the most meaningful to me when you can depend on one another, and not be afraid to ask. ask for help, for babysitting, for a meal, for an errand. true friends aren’t afraid to ask, because even if the answer is no, no face is lost. we understand each other.
secondly, friendship must include laughter. it’s cliche, maybe, but friends understand each other’s humor and laugh at/with each other!
Being there to celebrate the victories in one another’s lives as well as mourning the losses. Being there to pick up the pieces and help you put them back together again. Asking how you are…and really wanting to know. Not being afraid to tell you the truth when no one else will. Crying until there are no more tears and laughing until your sides hurt-sometimes in the same night.
As I get older, I have realized that it may take more effort to stay in touch with my closest girlfriends (as we currently live in separate areas), but once we are together, there isn’t the slightest effort involved! It may have been months since we have last seen each other, but for some strange reason, it feels like the week before! I love that! True friendship is natural and easy (smile).
I may only see my “bestest” buds a few times a year, but I know they are the real deal and it makes me so happy to know that they are only a phone call away to listen to whatever I may need to ramble on about!!

Even if life gets crazy at time my very best friend and I try and email each other each day. Some days sure are easier than others. We still send each other snail mail which is such a nice treat to recieve something other than a bill. At least once a month we try and get together. The last few we have really been planning ahead and getting a ton of that special friend time in. Just makes it so special now that we are so much busier than years ago!

Wegraduated from Texas A&M.Those are great girlfriends. We live in a variety of states. We don’t talk all of the time. But we know we are there for each other.

The most important quality of friendship is just that true friends will always be there when you need them. It doesn’t matter if you spoke the day before or 10 years ago, when the need arises friends are there. I am going through a divorce and it is HARD….I feel so alone. Then my friends are there to pick me…people I have not spoken to since high school or college…are there for me. Then my friends who have seen it all, and I talk to everyday…they are still here, for whatever I need. Without friends in my life I would be lost right now. I know that things will get better, and having friends around softens the blow. They tell it like it is, and let me cry on their shoulder….LOVE THEM ALL!

Friendship is someone who shows up on your doorstep after getting off of the phone with you because they know you are exhausted from being up with a newborn and tired from chasing a two year old while the newborn is asleep. Good and true friendship to me means loyalty, understanding and honesty. No doubt about that. My daughter is 8 years old and already is trying to discern from good and not so good friends. This is so tough to help her with because I am telling her quite honestly that it never goes away. You will always find people who act like they are a friend , but when it comes down to it, they are really not. Make lots of friends for sure, but you will end up with just a handful of true and good friends that you trust and know they love you.

Loyalty and Love are very important in a friendship. I’ve known my best friend all of my life (45 years). In fact, our Father’s were friends in India over 60 years ago! They both came to this country to attend college, got married, divorced, remarried, etc. but always stayed close.
A true friend will stand by you no matter what and love you for who you are (flaws and all). A true friend is like family – no matter how upset you get with them, you always know that they are there for you no matter what.

My best friend and I met in kindergarten, graduated from high school in 1968, met wonderful men and were in each others weddings. When I followed her move to Detroit and knew no one, she babysat for my son so I could go to work. We were there for each other as we had more children (me 5 more and she only1) and they grew up and became good friends. We’ve comforted each other as we lost our mothers and my father and now her godmother. We know each other well. We know what each needs and we’re always there for each other–even though right now we are separated by 600 miles. Sometimes we can go without talking for months and pick up the conversation where we left off. Paulette is my true friend and I’d really like to be able to send the friendship necklace to her!!
My friends never judge me. No matter what I have to say. Weather hubs and I are arguing, or my 3 year old is driving me bonkers, or I really start questioning everything in life.

After quitting work to stay home full time with my baby (now 5 and big sister to a 2 yr old) I found my friends falling away. I would definitely say trust is the core quality of my friendships. Trust that if I confide, it won’t be shared. Trust that they will speak when there are words that need to be said (either in correction or encouragement). Trust that we can share the nitty gritty of our lives and there will be shared laughter or tears… It definitely helps to have things in common, and to be able to laugh a lot too!
Two of the greatest movies on friendship-“Beaches”and any of the Anne of Green Gables series. I love how Anne describes her best friends as “bosom buddies”. I believe you can never have too many friends-they are so important to me! I love when each new year starts and look forward to seeing how many new friends God will bring into my life and actually keep a journal of new friends I meet each year-weird, huh? My favorite kind of friends are those who are like the sister you never had-you just click on so many levels.

Trust and honesty are probably the most important qualities I feel I look for in a friend. Im 18 and already in my short lived life I have really found that good true friends are hard to come by. I have very few what I consider true and unconditional friends, someone i feel loves me for who I am as a person and I could go to with anything and they would be there for me. My best friend Kaleigh, although the miles between Scottsdale, AZ and Seattle, WA keep us apart and we see eachother not as often as we would like, wether we talk once a day, week or month, she is the one true friend I know would always be there for me at the drop of a hat and I would do the same for her . Each and every moment we do get to spend together makes memories that will last a lifetime.

My favorite kind of friend is the one that, when she calls you or you call her, she gives you no guilt trip about being out of touch. She is just so thrilled to be talking to you and that gives you the freedom to talk without feeling bad or upset that you went so long with no communication. I think that is the sign of someone who truly loves you and wants to hear from you!

Reliability…I have two friends who are the best and every morning we are there for a each other via email. We haven’t missed a day emailing since we all graduated college and moved away over 8 years ago. Just knowing they are there for me and will listen to my venting, marriage/kid stories and I can be there for them as well.

Wow – I LOVE that necklace. Friendship is so much and I my “bestest friend in all the world” and I have been friends since 5th grade and we will both turn 52 in just a few months! We are always “there” for each other – whether in person or on the phone. We’ve “been there” for each other in births, deaths of loved ones, marriages, divorces, graduations – you name it, we are “there” for each other. The key, for me, in friendship is dependability. I love being to depend that someone will be there when I call. I depend on them to be honest and trustworthy. I good friend is someone who doesn’t judge and who will always stick by you through thick and thin. And when things are tough, they will make you laugh or be there to give you advice. It’s funny how as you get older you have so many different kinds of friends. It’s not like high school or college. As you get older, you have your “childhood BFF”, your “work BFF”, your “other mommy BFF”, your “single BFF.” I really cherish the diversity in those friends. Each is there for you for a different reason and I feel very lucky to have an awesome group of friends. I would just have a REALLY hard time deciding who to give the necklace to!!

I have to agree that it is harder when we get older to make and even sometimes keep good friends. My friends all have that same quality as yours – that we can go 6 months with forgetting to return phonecalls but no-one minds and when we do speak, it feels just like the last time was yesterday. Loyalty is something I really treasure.
Vulnerability and, not sure what the actual word for this would be, but just being able to sit in the same room and not have to talk….being comfortable that way. I have such wonderful friends. Oh, this makes me miss my best friend. She moved away about 10 years ago. I can’t pin-point the exact characteristic that makes her so special . . . she just is. It’s amazing how 600 miles, 10 years, and 7 kids can’t change a thing–or at least not the important ones.
I would give the necklace to my friend Bonnie who has been my friend for 55 years, we are both sixty this year. It was in her home that I learned how to love and what a Mom and Dad should be, she shared her parents with me always, and when they went home to heaven, none of our mutual friends were surprised to see me there with her, I can not see her for years but when we do we pick up where we left off and she is my greatest encourager (besides my husband) She also knew me when and still loves me!

The most important part of friendship is being there for one another. It is easy to let laundry, dishes, and whatever else is going on in your life to let go of your friends. Friendships are based on communication and you need to sit down and call your friends.
Someone who is honest and not afraid to tell the truth. My closest friends are not afraid to help me correct my bad attitudes and negative comments. They love me enough to be that honest with me. Not to mention they all have a sense of humor and can be silly and immature with me.
By far, my favorite of your sweet designs! I found it hard to make friends until I turned forty. I was a young bride, three kids by 26 and I just didn’t connect. Now I have more friends that I can keep up with. The most important trait, that they love me even when I can’t be available to run around, talk on the phone, etc. When I haven’t talked to one of them for months, pick up the phone and we pick up right where we left off. I LOVE that. And that is hard to come by. Real friends aren’t needy.

Good, True Friends are hard to come by for sure! I love the kind of friend like you described, of being able to connect in minutes if you haven’t seen them in 6 months! Blogs are so great for helping to stay and feel connected in each other’s lives. The necklace is adorable! I would give it to my friend Kris who I have known for almost 30 years (of course we weren’t really friends when we were 2, but it’s amazing to still be connected after all these years!).

my friends are patient with me as I’ve been traveling for my work for the last year and a half; they cherish time spent with me and spend time communicating with me via the phone, email, blogs, whatever when I am not a short drive away.
And my friends make me laugh. We find humor in the days and that’s a sweet kind of golden lining that I never want to miss.
Friendship is hard to come by – I didn’t realize that when I was young. I’m 47 now, the kids are grown and there have been a couple of moves along the way and life – life can be hard and it has totally changed me, I’m not the person I used to be. I didn’t know I wouldn’t alway have a good friend, oh I’ve got acquaintances, neighbors, that sort of thing, but I miss those deep friendships that I once had. Actually though, sometimes friends can take the place of God if we’re not careful, and I believe that’s why I’ve had this “dry” season in my life. I believe I looked to friends sometimes when I should have been looking to God. Be sure to give God 1st place in your life and the rest will fall into place.

Since most of my very closest friends live half-way across the world from me, communication is the most important to me. I have friends that I literally am not able to see for years, but when we finally catch up, its like we were never apart. This is so important to me. A friend who no matter where in the world I am, I can always go to her with anything, and I know she’ll be praying for me.

I am so lucky to have a great group of friends that I can rely on. We would do ANYTHING if we needed to for each other and know that they would do the same too. We are all so busy. Some of us have kids and others are empty nesters – but we always stop what we are doing to get together every Sunday to knit and gab! We also get together on Monday evenings too. My friends are important to me now that I’m older. I really value their friendship and all of their experiences that they have to share. When I moved here 6 years ago, I only knew my husband’s family – and they are part of my circle of friends- but I know that this group of friends are like my family too! (without the strings!)

I have always said that you are given your family but your friends are something that you can choose. With that being said, my friendships are full of support, encouragement, laughter and NO GUILT. We are all busy women and the last thing we need is to feel guilty for not being able to get together, or return that phone call. Friendships should be about joy and I thank God for my great group of friends.
My friends are spread out among a variety of different states and we don’t get to see each other very much. But we always know that we’re only a phone call away from being connected. Distance isn’t an issue for true friends!
My best friend Jenny recently moved away and I miss her fiercely! We used to live 4 minutes apart and would constantly be at each others houses. While the kids played, we would sip coffee and chat. So fun! Now that she’s gone, we still talk on the phone everyday, but it’s just not the same. I would love to be able to send her this necklace to let her know how important she is to me, no matter where she lives!

The old saying (not sure of the exact quote): A friend is someone who knows everything about you…and loves you anyway, just like Jesus. A couple of things about my best friend is that she is there when I need her, she encourages, she shares her struggles freely, and now that we are apart from each other, figures out ways to keep in touch – we even figure out ways to meet each other, either halfway or she comes to visit (well, once, but, hey, I’ll take it). I can trust her with my own struggles and we have times of laughter and fun. And I love the necklace.

I think that acceptance is one of the most important things in friendship. To support another person in something you do not necessarily agree on it the true mark of friendship.
Friends are kind, loyal, available, trustworthy, fun, and share same interests.

My friend Betty died this year of cancer and she taught me the qualities of a true friend – kindness, shared faith, positive support at all times. The necklace is beautiful!!!!!

My most treasured friends are the relationships where there is no judgement, just acceptance and love for the person God created them to be. My dearest friends are the ones I can call anytime, for anything and I know they will be there for me or my family…to hear my sorrow, laugh at my mishaps and pray for me always.
My favorite qualities in my best friend are her loyalty, kindness, patience and her sensitivity to situations. While I was trying to have my first child, she got pregnant with her second and third. She never talked about her pregnancies unless I asked first (which I did often – she’s my best friend!) because she knew how hard it was for me to see and hear about peoples babies. I now have my little miracle and we are enjoying our girls growing up together. I’m so thankful to have her in my life.
The most important to me is honesty. I just realized it about a year ago and am so thankful I did!! I encourage all of my friends to just be honest with me and I’m hoping they are. 🙂
Trusting, when we let each other just be ourselves, and sometimes hold each other accountable. For me a Christian friend makes a huge difference, simply because we are on the same path with the same motive in life. We fellowship sharing what we’re learning and know.

The qualities that I admire in my friends are honesty, sincerity, and a common love of Jesus Christ. As I have aged I have realized that friends change and that is okay. . . but your true friends will always be there for you . . . even if they are new friends.
My favorite qualities are honesty (sometimes brutal if necessary), fun, like-mindedness (believer), ability to make me smile even when I don’t want to! I am so blessed with some amazing women in my life!

Since I’ve become a parent , I think what has meant the most to me are friends who are going through the same parenting difficulties and who want the same things for their children – to love the Lord and do His will.
a true friend means being able to understand and accept one another right where they are at. even when its messy, and undone they are still there to listen and help pull you back together. a true friend is caring, supportive, loving, honest and can make the toughest situations easier to go through. 🙂

I love this new necklace! Funny, I was just having a discussion with a good friend about the qualities we need in a friendship. No more of the “shallow” friendships, we need a deep one. I honestly don’t have a lot of friends. I used to. But people get older, go elsewhere, change goals…It’s been hard for me. Honestly, my sister is probably my best friend. We don’t always get along. But we work it out. Last week we were yelling at each other one minute, and laughing at an inside joke the next.

THere is NOTHING better than friends!!! I am so blessed to have WONDERFUL ones, and that they love the Lord and honor Him with their life is the greatest characteristic a friend could have. Right after that being that we have things in common, love our kids and have fun and laugh together. I have been blessed to have a group of amazing ladies as a friend base. Some of us have been friends for 30 years. The quality I cherish the most is the compassion and loyalty we have. No matter wher we all are we are right there if needed! I love them all!

Oh, my! I was just looking at this (and will probably be ordering if I don’t win) for my dearest friend R. She lives in California (I’m in IL), and has been my best friend since college. We see each other once a year at best, but have many heart-to-hearts over the phone, email, facebook, etc. She’s volunteered to come stay with us in December after the birth of our second baby to help with whatever she can… and this just blows me away, since she’s only working part time while finishing her master’s degree. It’s a sacrifice of time and resources on her part, and I think that’s what makes her such a great friend. She’s willing to go the extra mile, whatever it takes, to love a friend.

Oh I LOVE this one! I think the best qualities in a friend are honesty and faithfulness. Someone who will stick with you through thick and thin but isn’t afraid to tell you those words you really need to hear, even if you don’t like them :).

Friendship to me is being there no matter what. Through the good and bad. The best kind of friend is one who will encourage you in the things of God, who will hold your hand through the hard times, who will be honest with you and isn’t afraid to hurt your feelings because at the end of the day, she knows your strong enough to take it – even if it does hurt at first. Friendship is about seeing the other person the way God sees them because there will be times (ok, most of the time) we don’t see ourselves that way and we need a friend to say, “You’ve grown so much in the Lord. I wish you could see what I see.” A true friend won’t just say they are praying for you because you are always in their prayers. Friends aren’t just friends – they are our sisters in the Lord.

Constant. We are the same today as we were 30 years ago. We laugh at our daughters, who look just like us – and were born 5 days apart. Love the necklace – I am the short flower and she is the tall one.
For me, it’s about understanding one another, being tolerant and patient. And having fun as well as the serious stuff.
There are a myriad of qualities that constitute a great friend…..the qualities vary depending on the person. My bestest girlfriend has a wonderful sense of humor, would help me in a sec, loves to exercise, loves to drink light beer on the beach, pokes fun of herself, and encourages me at every turn to never give up! I love her and appreciate her. She is also a cancer survivor who has never once felt sorry for herself….she is amazing!
To me, friendship involves trust and making the other person a priority. Only a few friends completely exhibit this in my life, and they are all the more treasured because of it.

My best friend is the ones who doesn’t care that I haven’t called in weeks because they understand my crazy schedule. A friend is someone who will sit and listen while I complain about things going on and then make a joke to make me laugh. A friend is someone who makes me feel safe and like I am “coming home”. I am lucky to have a few women like this in my life…and they know they can always come to me too!
Certainly patience (I can be so busy and consequently neglect my dear friends – they are wonderfully patient with me)… and genuineness. Real friends are timeless. Stand the test of time. Honest with feelings and generous with love and understanding. Quick to forgive, slow to anger. Willing to stick up for you no matter what. Friends are ones who over time become a part of your family. You start calling each other’s parents, mom and dad. Their siblings are yours and vice versa. Laugh with you until you cry and feel like you had the best abs workout. Cry with you and comfort you when you are down, hurt or just emotionally drained. They step in when they need to fill a gap. Or step back when they feel it’s too crowded. But are always secure in the friendhsip. Friends are ones when you go to college and don’t see them for four years but you both find you way back home and pick up right where you left off, never letting go again. Ahhh, I love my friends.
Two years ago I moved to Mexico to work at a children’s home. I so appreciate that when I go back to the states to visit that there are friends I can just pick up with and it is like I never left.

I could write a book on friendship, but I’ll spare you.
To me, true friendship is what the others have said, but it is also made of people who contantly encourage you to be better. They know your failings and love you anyway, but it doesn’t stop there. They’re willing to say the hard things, or do the hard things, or pray the hard things to move you closer and closer toward the person God intends for you to be.
A friend is someone who is always “present” in your connections and no matter how far apart you may be a simple phone call can feel as if you are sitting over coffee in the same town…it’s comfortable…just like a short, 1%, half caf, carmel mocha, stirred with light whip. 🙂
The friendships I value the most are the ones with a symbiotic nature, where it’s a give and take, a complete sharing of life, love, hearts, good times, not-so-good times. We uplift each other, learn from each other, teach each other, support each other… where our differences compliment each other, and our similarities bring us closer together. When time goes by and we know we’ve both been too busy to nurture the friendship, we understand, and we pick up from where we’ve left off.
I call these friendships “Sister-Friends”.
These friendships are treasures, precious jewels that must be nurtured, valued, guarded, appreciated. They are a gift from God.
In 2007, my husband and I moved 8 hours away from my best friend to attend seminary. And she sat in the car and cried with me the day before I moved. But, our friendship has lasted and she’s still my best friend and she’s only a phone call away. So, I think that loyalty is the best quality in a friend.

My friend Amy that I’ve known since I was six. She’s been through everything with me. Though a big ocean separates us, she’s always been there for me and most recently she came to visit me in Africa to see my life as a missionary. When we said goodbye she stood in tears and said, “Now I understand why you do what you do!” We can pick right up where we left off and she’s like a sister to me. I am blessed to have her in my life and glad to call her my best friend!

The greatest characteristic in a friend is that fact that she will never judge you for something you did (and feel horribly about). That’s how is is with me & my best friend. I can tell her anything & I know she will never judge me (& I would never judge her). We met in the 3rd grade & have been besties ever since. Both of us have brothers so we were like each others sisters. I was made of honor in her wedding & she will be the same in my upcoming wedding! Yay!
