moonlight and late night chats

one evening at hilton head, we stayed out on the beach until very late. just talking and eating dessert and enjoying the warm night and moonlight.

my first instinct was to get up and go inside, but i told myself, no just relax. enjoy these moments. there is nothing to rush off to do. i need to sit here in this moment and just be. and i’m so glad i did.

i had the loveliest chat with emily {have you seen her new book? you can read the first chapter here} it was the kind of conversation that goes deep to the hard places that i sometimes don’t want to think about, let alone say out loud.

and while we were chatting i set my camera on the sand and turned the autofocus off. i let the shutter take forever to capture the image–of the soft moonlight, the waves rolling in and sarah and the gypsy mama running and spinning circles on the sand.

such an amazing, magical night. i feel like i can still hold those moments in my hand.

have you taken time lately to just sit and be and not rush off? have you taken time to linger and really be present in the moment?

  1. i love that your camera captured moon flare. Seriously amazing. That was a major highlight of the trip for me, sitting with you and talking about life and family and risk.

    thank you, friend. what joy.

  2. I try hard to just sit and enjoy the moment. Love the sound of crickets as daylight fades away…that’s my favorite time to sit back, relax, and listen. Glad you took time out and enjoyed it.

  3. Hi Lisa, so sorry I haven’t commented in a wee while, I’ve just been run off my feet gardening etc, getting ready for this blasted Iris Convention in early November. Can’t wait for it to be over now. I would love to have a moment to just be – yesterday we found out our dear beloved cat (we rescued him from the SPCA (animal shelter) in Singapore 8 years ago) has intestinal adenocarcinoma so we may have to put him down before long. He has had inflammatory bowel disease since he was about 3 and has coped really well on a special diet. Lately he’s been unwell and not like himself at all. He had two teeth out (very necessary) on Monday and they took a needle biopsy of his intestines while he was out. It sowed some very nasty cancer cells, poor wee honey. Check out my blog if you like, I posted a cute pic of him yesterday. We (especially me) are very sad. He has been my constant companion especially when John was travelling a lot in the past. I feel very flat and unsure what to do for the best for Sabah. Loved your post, it made me feel serene just reading it! xxx

  4. Reminds me of words that Ann Voskamp shared recently, about the only way to slow down the rush of time is to allow ourselves to put our full weight, to live fully, in each moment. Sounds like just that type of night at Hilton Head — well done, girl, well done. Love the photos, and I can feel the depth of those memories all the way from over here!

    <3 you!

  5. Lisa,
I’ve been following your blog now for about 6 months and I just love everything about it. I love your story and your work and I LOVE this post. The pictures are lovely, and the message is even sweeter. I find that when I get wrapped up in life’s “to do” list and the world stops making sense the only thing that brings me back to what matters is a little time to enjoy those simple things in life. Like a big, glowing moon and precious time with the ones I love. Thank you for this post and thank you for your blog!
    Katie
